Cassie’s Story
Member of the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians
Cassandra Nava is deeply committed to preserving and revitalizing the culture of the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians. As the Cultural Resources Coordinator, she plays a crucial role in connecting her community with their heritage. Whether she’s identifying and gathering plants in the woods, coordinating cultural classes in schools, or planning events, Cassandra’s work is driven by a passion for ensuring that the cultural practices and traditions of her tribe are not lost.
Growing up away from her tribe, Cassandra’s journey toward cultural reconnection has been both personal and profound. She didn’t initially see herself as a Native woman, but through her role and her immersion in her community, she has found a deep connection to her culture. Her own struggles with this reconnection have made her more determined to help others, particularly the younger generation, find their place within their heritage and feel a sense of belonging.
Cassandra is passionate about providing younger generations with opportunities to connect with their roots, whether through language, cultural practices, or community involvement. She believes that understanding and embracing one’s cultural identity is vital for personal growth and confidence. Cassandra’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of cultural identity and the role it plays in shaping confident, connected individuals.
