Elizabeth’s Story

Member of the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians

Elizabeth Bryant is passionate about preserving the cultural heritage of the Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians, where she serves as the lead Takelma language teacher. For Elizabeth, learning and teaching Takelma is more than a profession; it’s a deeply personal journey that connects her with her ancestors. Through the language, she experiences the worldview of those who came before her, understanding their thoughts and values in a way that transcends time. This connection drives her commitment to revitalizing the Takelma language and ensuring it remains a living, breathing part of her community’s identity.

Growing up, Elizabeth didn’t envision herself in this role. Her initial interests were in forestry and other outdoor pursuits. However, an internship during her high school years, where she began working with children in after school programs, sparked a passion for teaching. As she delved deeper into her cultural roots and began experimenting with language teaching, Elizabeth found her true calling. She now leads the Takelma language program, dedicated to expanding the number of speakers and integrating the language into daily life within the community.

Elizabeth’s work is about more than just teaching a language; it’s about fostering a sense of identity and belonging among younger generations. She dreams of a future where Takelma is spoken fluently within homes, where media in the language is as common as it is in English, and where cultural practices are embraced and celebrated openly. Through her dedication, Elizabeth not only preserves her heritage but also ensures that it thrives in the hands of the next generation.
