Career Journeys 2024

Here’s What’s Next for Career Journeys

As we enter into the third phase of the Career Journeys project, we are happy to report that we have produced stories from each of Oregon’s 19 ESDs. Additionally, we have produced profiles representing each of the 16 CTE Career Clusters. Our goals for the future are to continue to produce stories that represent young Oregonians and the work they do. This is all in service to the Oregon Department of Education’s commitment to serving all students as they move throughout their learning journeys, onto careers in the state (and beyond). Moving forward, we are seeking recommendations of interviewees from each of Oregon’s nine federally recognized Tribes.

We ask that story candidates are in the earlier stages of their careers (22-32 years old). This is to align with our research around near-peer mentoring, which suggests that students retain information more readily when viewing stories of other young people. As you consider potential candidates for this project, please note the identified Regions and Career Clusters in which there is a specific need to feature in Career Journeys.

Additionally, please consider how the interviewee may be accessible and personable to students. The goal is for our students in middle and high school to see themselves in the storytelling. Is it possible that the interviewee may have struggled with a subject matter, that they were the first to go to college in their families, or that they have overcome something in their life that is relatable to our middle and high school youth? Is it possible they can tell a detailed story about how CTE and STEM influenced their academic journey and career choice? Additionally, if you have funding available and want to engage the CJV team to interview/feature additional persons or projects in your region for your own storytelling or documentation of work, please provide that information in the final questions of the survey and we will follow-up with your request.

Thank you for your consideration.

Please contact susan.samek@ode.oregon.gov if you have any additional questions.
